Wrapping Up
I've completed what I wanted to get done--caught 100 of one of the Tarasques, silvered one of the others, and saved up 100 million coins. I spent the final day burning through over 20 days of time potion, making lacquer and catching salamanders to make more lacquer, and occasionally pausing to go after Oni Bangles to make Orichalcum.
When I'd caught 50 of the Swamp Tarasques, I turned my attention to cash--I made a few more lacquer to go after Storsie, to push me that last few million to get 100. (I was hoping the game would last long enough to go after 1 billion, but alas, it was not to be.)
Then I burned through over 200 wishing coins in Nanjing, getting the 500 coin achievement. I leave off with 3 wishing achievements unfinished, and the …

Hi guys,
As you have read Here Be Monsters is coming to an end. It was a tough decision that the company had to make, but it is the right one. A lot of people here will be upset by the news, having spent a lot of time playing the game and living in this fantastical world that was created. There really aren’t other games out there like Here Be Monsters, which has this depth of story and a vast world where people could expl…
Prepping For New Quests
With new Quests coming after a loooong break, most of us haven't been spending time getting ready. While we don't know exactly what we'll need, we know there'll be a new trap and new monsters (the teaser pics are from Tarascon, so we can predit it'll be one or more of the tarasque dragons, which are only trappable there and at Cap de Nice).
The three tarasques, Swamp, Dirt, and Shadow, are worth a LOT of money to catch... so the trap is going to be very expensive to build, and the bait will probably involve multiple kinds of loot. If you haven't caught up with all the quests yet, expect to ignore these until you have. (Don't worry, they'll still be around later, and by then, people will have worked the bugs out and come up with the best way…

Quick Guide to the DQs
I still love the DQs but I'm hopeless at remembering which bait/trap/location combo is best for each one so I've made this quicky guide so I don' have to go hopping all over the wiki & almanac every day
NB If the location is not required by the DQ I've used CuCN's favourite locations here: http://herebemonsters.wikia.com/wiki/User:CuCN/Favorite_Locations -a fantastic resource which I use all the time!
Please comment if you find it useful (or any mistakes!)
The Fastest Lepidopterist
With the new achievement for butterfly collecting, many folk will be visiting places with several kinds of butterflies and rounding up everything they can find, over and over, until either they get tired of clicking or run out of Watermelon Juice. If you want to do so efficiently—going to the fewest number of places, and within those options, the larger places that let you zoom out for easy butterfly-catching—here’s a guide to where they can be found with the fewest overlaps.
- 1 Recommended Locations
- 2 Explanations and Other Details
- 2.1 Rare and Remote
- 2.2 Best Options Among Several
- 2.3 Rounding Up the Stragglers

Atlantis
In the Pearl Necklace quest we get to meet the delightful Princess Kimmy, and she mentions her sisters in Atlantis! I would be so excited to get Atlantis as a new location, but where would it be? And how much energy would it take to get there?
Droopy Ceibo
I think somebody needs to go round and water the Ceibo Trees, the blossom is falling, LOL!
I really hope they go back as they were soon, don't much fancy updating photos for all the all the Ceibo locations, still not round all the Silver Birch locations yet! :)
Shi Shi
In the In Case of Emergency quest, Leona tells your folk that legend has it that the Shi Shi (Lion Statues) were once alive, and in Better Never Than Late Zhong Kui brings them back to life and has them under his command - all the Lion Statues have come to life!
I've had a little trip round China and MOST of the Shi Shi are missing! They have disappeared from:
- Chaohu Lake
- Changzhi
- Daliangzihe Forest
- Lancang River
- Libo Karst
- Qinghai Lake
- Wuwei
- Zhongnan Mountain
- Akakura Shrine
But they are still there at:
- Ganhe River
- Nanjing
- Nanyue
- Tai Shan
Have you spotted any more missing Shi Shi?
I really can't wait for the next quests, I hope we get to start trapping Yin Shishi and Yang Shishi soon , as they are made of Stone and Jade, I wonder what their baits will be?

Ginger peluda potion barrell
I have somehow managed to plant this on my homestead and need it back to finish a quest.... Any ideas?
Going for Gold
I now have my gold trophy for 51 monsters (so not included here)
This table is for me to work out how much bait I need to make to get gold trophies for all monsters O M G
18/03/2015 The end is in sight (of making baits at least, I still have A LOT of trapping to do!)
UPDATE: Golded all the monsters except the Tarasques. Part of me didn't want to trap any Tarasques so I could have all gold, but I wanted to finish the quests more. So sad it's ending......
I made it because SOMEBODY in our house threw away my paper notes....

Lancashire Hotpot
In the latest release Lancashire Hotpot was added as a recipe and if you look closely at the Almanac you will see a lovely tribute to star of Coronation Street, Betty Driver.
If you are not familiar with Coronation Street, Betty was the barmaid whose Lancashire Hotpot was famous.
Betty died in 2011 and her portrait hangs in the Rovers Return pub and can still be seen in the soap. I love it that the devs are Corrie fans!
Perhaps we can expect Weatherfield to appear on the map next!
July 16, 2014 Game Update
We had a big update yesterday with a ton of new items and a new questline called Become the Chef of Steel! As always, it ends with a special achievement and a spectacular coveted trophy as a decorative prize.
The devs added a new crop, Black Pepper, but it doesn't look like we need it in anything yet. There are currently no recipes or quests that require this item, so for now players are just growing it to add to a stockpile for the future.
We saw the release of a new monster - the Fenghuang. This monster needs the Da Vinci Rockets trap and a handful of new alchemy baits based off the new Morning Dew item.
In addition, we saw a brand new 'fish', the Abalone snail! There are a handful of new recipes with the abalone that are required for the n…
The Great Yellow Butterfly Hunt
As I've just used up all my Rainbow Lures catching sharks, I thought I'd do a little experiment to try and find a good place to catch Danube Clouded Yellow butterflies. Hortobagy Puszta is the but I've never had much luck catching them there. Dacian Fortresses, Mount Arlan, Sandomierz Valley and Zengo are all mentioned in the comments on the Danube Clouded Yellow page, so I caught 40 total butterflies at each location and here are my results:
- I prefer the locations that don't have the arid landscape as I find it harder to see the butterflies against the yellow background.
- I found it easier to catch butterflies at places like Sandomierz Valley where you can remove all the trees so the butteflies can't hide behind fruit trees etc.
- I like the …
Bait + Trap Values
The question came up, on the forums, of how a trap with bars, combined with a bait of bars, had a trap rate of only . The explanation was offered that the bars showing were "bars below 8," and a rating of -1 and -2 would of course combine to -3, or 5 bars.
That's a reasonable enough explanation--except it's not how they all work. I gathered some numbers. A trap of 8 bars, with a bait of 6 bars, can have a trap rate of 6 to 8, depending on... factors that players can't see. Location can make a difference, but does not usually. In some cases, different bait rates give the exact same total trapping chance.
The only conclusion I have to draw is that trap power matters a lot more than bait bars--but exactly how that gets applied, we can't tell. …
June 11 Update: Warrior Monsters
This is mostly a catchall post for noting what's been changed so we can edit the wiki as we have time to catch up.
3 new traps: Genin Trap, Jounin Trap, Chuunin Trap, which look like updated versions of the Genin. Jounin seems to be the most advanced, but that's not quite clear yet. Bunch of parts for those, most of which are still secret because nobody's gotten there yet.
7 monsters released: Centaur Scout, Centaur Archer, Centaur Warrior; Aurora Valkyrie, Storm Valkyrie; Baykok Warrior, Baykok Chief. They probably all need stats and flavor text updated along with baits & traps added; the Scout changed a lot from the unreleased version.
Baits for all those. Lots of baits; some ingredients changed on existing foods. New crop item: Eggplant. (…
iPad Basics
Since the iPad release going world-wide last week, we've had a tons of questions. We thought it might be about time to write up a how-to guide that explains a few of the basics. You can find the iPad FAQs on the HBM Forum, : The AMAZING iPad FAQs
To collect butterflies, you'll need to run up close to them until you see the "Catch" button appear above them, then click the button.

May 27, 2014 Update
The developers released an update to the game today that mainly deals with minor visual changes, most notably the Shop purchasing screen appearance. Aside from this change, the devs have moved the A true Artisan Achievement and Master of all Achievement out of the "Homestead" section in the Almanac and made them secret achievements.
The devs have added several layers of categories to the shop. Without commenting on their ease of use, all the items have been dropped into these subcategories with additional subcategories. I think the intention was to allow us to locate items easier for purchasing, but there is a strain for players trying to sell items and being unable to find them.
Additionally, they have removed the information box about item…
Preparing for the Next Quest
Sometime soon, there'll be another quest line. We don't even have any hints about it--no idea whether it's likely to be a continuation of the Nanjing lines, focused on Du Ping or maybe the Chef of Steel contest, or some new European quest, or maybe the opening of another major city. But I'm caught up on replacing the supplies I wore down during the last quests, and I did some work on my Trapping Achievements and trophy-hunting. I want to be prepared for the next quest, not caught off-guard like the last one (12 red hair! Eeep!), so now that I have a bit of downtime, I'm planning ahead.
I have the Dragonscale Backpack, and a Barn#Fabulous Barn, so I have plenty of space to store everything I want. If I didn't have those, I'd make a more pare…
More new templates and buildings
We've had a big batch of new buildings released with the May 7th update and realized the way we were displaying them needed a little work. So to bring things up to speed with the rest of the wiki, we created a special template that allows us to display building materials needed for construction. We were able to use the Crafting box as a sample, but here is the brand new Homestead Building template.
The template page I linked above has some more details on how it works if you're interested in seeing it in action, but it should work the same way as our Crafting template. The main difference is that you construct buildings right on your homestead instead of putting them together in a workshop.
Since we've got so many new buildings (and we're li…
How Sweet Is That Cake?
I decided to craft a Wedding Cake, mostly to see how difficult it would be, and partially because they're worth over 6000 . Hey, new fast money-making gimmick! (Probably not. It takes too many backpack slots for low-level players, and takes too long to bother for everyone else. The newest make-money-fast trick is mining for Jade or Cinnabar.) So, without having to jump between almanac listings or wiki pages, here's the breakdown for Wedding Cake:
5 Strawberry Fondant
- 2 Sugar = 10 Sugarcane
- 1 Water
- 5 Strawberries
5 Lemon Cake (made in batches of 2)
- 5 Lemons
- 1 Cow's Milk
- 1 Flour = 5 Wheat

Memories of Du Ping - April 23rd update
We had a big update on April 23rd that introduced two new monsters, a new homestead building, new trap, new loot, and two brand new quest lines in the Nanjing series! In addition to all the new items, we saw a handful of changes to older items like the pricing of Red Cabbage and the recipe yield for some of the paint.
The new quest lines, Engineering Excellence Quest Line and Ghosts of the Past Quest Line, begin after The Oni Way to Find Out is to Try. You must help Bashak prepare to build the brand new Razzle Dazzler trap and save Du Ping.
The new monsters Jorogumo and Baldanders can be trapped with the new trap. The Jorogumo drops an interesting loot item called Silken Cocoons. You can take these to your Homestead and place them on the gro…
What's going on with the Redheads?
Since we need so much Fiery Hair for the Razzle Dazzler, I've been trapping a lot of Redheads (Redhead Selkie, Redhead Mermaid & Banksia Pixie) but noticed their bait are off. They match up in the wiki and the almanac but when placed in a trap are different.

The Egg-stra Mile Quests, Chat, and Wiki Updates
There was a 'holiday' game update on April 15th that added a new quest line to the end of The Great Egg Hunt Quest Line with Claudia and the Wolpertinger Eggs. The quests have you hopping around the world, starting with A Burrowed Frau, and handing out the lost Wolpertinger Eggs.
This is going to be a permanent feature of the game, and will activate when you complete the final quest in the Great Egg Hunt quest line. For a complete list of all the new quests and items, see the Update April 15, 2014 category page.

Trophy Panic April 2 2014 Update
We had a new update today that included the new Jade Dragon monster, the Jade Storm Trap, and a handful of new quests that involved cooking and trapping! The Chef of Steel Trophy has been stolen from Nanjing and Mrs Wong sends you on a mission to find it. There is a special, though short, appearance from Trapper Andrew and a hilarious Loved Up Vegetable Lamb that does nothing but emote hearts and Lick things. The quests start with the True Detective quest and end with the A Lesson In Comedy Achievement.

Template Madness
We've been doing a lot of behind the scenes work on fixing up the wiki's navigation and general appearance.
The biggest news is the new recipe crafting template! It took quite a while to work out all the little kinks in it, but I'm happy to announce that we have a new template! You can read more about how the template works over on our Crafting template page. But here's how it looks!

Monster Bait Table
Yippee!
It's finished!
I've moved it across to: http://herebemonsters.wikia.com/wiki/Monster_Bait_Table
Let me know if it's useful!
creep trees
what happens when you dont know you were supposed to save the creep trees and thought they were ugly and chopped them all down and the stumps? Is there a place to find and get another one?
Suggestion
Is there somewhere or can a list be created of Baits? Like the spead sheets we have already regarding monsters a list of all baits and what monster or fish they catch.
Crafting time not listed?
I was looking at the items needed to get the Artisan of the Elements Achievement and I noticed that none of the five items listed had the crafting time listed. Where you craft it, what you can use it for and the sell price are all listed...but the time it takes to craft items is not. I checked some other items and some of them had the crafting time listed, but in the text, not in the information box that surrounds the item image. Why not put that information in the info along with the sell price and other stats? Along with the quantity each recipe makes, too...that information is not in the info box either, and the quantity made in each batch doesn't seem to be listed even in the text for a bunch of crafting items.
I'd like to edit the it…
Hard to make useful friends
Why do so few HBM players list their homestead in their speech bubble? It's not possible to know if you want to send a friend request to someone if you don't know where their homestead is, because free travel is the most important thing a HBM friend provides. Even if they never come and fertilize, or if they're not on often and so rarely reply to requests, a useful travel spot is a useful travel spot.
I understand if it's someone with a FULL friend list who wants to avoid new requests, but other than that, shouldn't EVERYONE have their homestead location listed in their Folk profile?
I did see a speech bubble today that said "Because thou art crunchy." and it made me laugh...but it didn't do anything to let me know if I should send him/her…
February 11, 2014 Game Update - Love is in the air!
We have a new seasonal update today that brings in the Love Week decorations and other items. The devs added a few new achievements and some decorations to honor the holiday week.
We can now gift each other with Love Letters that can be ground up and made into Anti-Love Cake or used to make regular Love Cake again! Remember this is a seasonal item so it will only be available to gift for a limited time!
With those two cooking recipes, we also have a brand new one for Candy Floss! And if you happen to make 10 of them you can get the brand new Don't Forget to Floss Achievement! We also have several secret achievements, including the Love is in the air Achievement and the Strong and Independent Achievement.

OK, my maths isn't great but here's my list of things I'll need to collect out in the world to make my 20 of each top Monster Baits:

Making Monster Bait
Now all the excitement of the Suddenly, Ninjas! quest is over I need something to keep me occupied so I've set myself the task of making 20 of each of the top bait for each monster that is currently trappable so I'm all set for all eventualities when the next quest is released.
I'm working on a list of which top baits are made in the campfire, lab or workshop so that I've got them all working busily.

Baking A Bakers Brioche
Progress: 15/18
Just Baked: Pear Pie
Up Next: Corn Bread -waiting on corn to grow-
Whats left: Corn Bread & Spice Cakes
Dreading: Spice Cakes.
Not only do Spice Cakes call for Cinnamon that I don't have the room to have stored, but they also call for Raisins which can only be obtained from Purple Grapes after 18 hours.
What made this Achievement easy in the long run? Stock piling up on Pastry, and having multiple different kinds of fruit trees on my homestead.
What made it difficult? The fact that I am incredibly impatient.
Suddenly, Ninjas!! January 30 Update
We have a big update that carries on the Nanjing quest series!! In addition to the new quests, we have a special treasure hunt for the Chinese New Year. The New Year items will only be available for a limited time, to see the details you can check out the Red Envelope page.
The devs have introduced a handful of new characters for us to enjoy, and brought back Leona, Bashak, and Eddie to help us combat the spreading corruption from our brand new base of operations in Chengdu! We start the new quest line with Recap with Bashak and can get the Suddenly, Ninjas! Achievement.
The new Big Bang Trap will help us trap the Oni monster and get the Oni Bangle loot item. There are a number of new items surrounding this new monster and building the trap …
Tables! Tables! Tables!
I decided it would be nice to be able to focus on crafting a few certain food items near yet under my max energy, so I decided it would be nice to have a table to reference... So, a bit of searching finds me the Energy page has just such a table, but that it's out of date. A few items are missing, and others have altered details. I went ahead and added/adjusted the items I currently have in my inventory, but it's a pretty darned big table. Feel free to join in, if you also find such a thing useful.

Hook, Line & Sinker - Jan 2, 2014 Update
Davey the Fisherman’s quests have been expanded, and he’s ready to share some of his mysterious past with you — prepare for a chilling tale of piracy on the high seas, with plenty of twists and turns. This contains 15 new quests for you to tackle, and will start you off on the mystery of Davey and his pirate crew… These quests expand upon the existing Davey storyline, and are available to all players, so older players who’ve met Davey before may find the start of the questline a little familiar.

New Davey quest chain
After completing The Blue Robin Tweets, I got a new quest from Davey, A Reel Rod. However, the line I got was different than the one attached to that quest, so perhaps it is old?
Next I received the quest Fish eat fish world and now I'm on to Fishy fun... I'll start adding there.
December 2013 Notes from Producer Michael
Happy Frost Fayre to all Trappers!
